Not really about this post, but that's thom paine, not Jefferson, you have pictured.

I realise they were both revolution for the hell of it types who thought the French revolution was pretty neat, but there actually was a difference.

Laci,
Thanks for the heads up.
I changed my quotes, as I do from time to time, but forgot to change the picture. I certainly would never lump the two men together as they had as many differences as they did things in common. I don't think either one was a frivolous supporter of revolution; I believe they were both lovers of freedom and equality.
Thanks for pointing out the mistake; it has been corrected!

Tango Daddy,
It has been hard to love conservatives for a long time and I have not been a fan of Andrew Sullivan in the past. I must say that I have considered him self-hating for his unwaivering support of conservativism in the face of the fact that he is homosexual and they hate homosexuals and his unwaivering support of the Catholic church in the face of the same. I still can't say I understand him, but he seems to be coming around some.

Ksliberal,
Thank you for this post, and hats off to Andrew Sullivan. He is exactly what the conservative Republicans need in their now far-right party: a rational, intelligent, moderate, and civil voice to counteract the mouthy crazies like Limbaugh, Beck, Palin, Boehner, and Armey. People like Sullivan need to recapture control of their party from the ultra-conservative reactionary wackos!
